November 1 Tariff Deadline Looms Over Trump-Xi APEC Meeting

Date:

A November 1 deadline for new 100% US tariffs on Chinese goods is looming over the upcoming APEC meeting between President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping.
The critical talks are set for Thursday in South Korea. Despite the looming deadline, Trump, speaking from Tokyo, was optimistic. “That’s a big meeting, and I think it’s going to work out very well,” he said.
The tariff threat was the US response to China’s decision to impose tight controls on its rare earth exports.
This, combined with new US port fees and Chinese countermeasures, has triggered a new flare-up in the trade war.
Trump, however, predicted a “fantastic meeting” and a positive outcome that would be “great for everybody.”
The president’s Asia trip has been squarely focused on trade. His activities in Japan, including meeting with PM Sanae Takaichi and business leaders, were all part of an effort to highlight America’s global economic influence ahead of the Xi showdown.
