The central premise of Elon Musk’s new encyclopedia, Grokipedia—that it is “fact-checked” by his AI, Grok—is facing a significant challenge. Immediately upon launch, journalists and critics have pointed out glaring inaccuracies and biased narratives.
The most notable inaccuracy cited is a claim that pornography made the Aids epidemic worse. This false information highlights the potential dangers of relying on an AI chatbot, programmed with its owner’s biases, as a sole arbiter of truth, rather than Wikipedia’s transparent human-editing process.
The platform’s political bias is equally stark. Grokipedia’s entry on the January 6 Capitol riot promotes the thoroughly debunked lie of “widespread claims of voting irregularities” from the 2020 election.
This entry reframes the attack as an “enduring dispute,” minimizing Donald Trump’s role and suggesting the rioters had “legitimate grievances.” It also accuses “mainstream accounts” of amplifying casualty figures “beyond forensic evidence.”
Musk, who has programmed his social media site X to amplify conservative voices, launched Grokipedia as a right-wing alternative to information sources he dislikes. This new platform, suggested by a former Trump official, appears to be prioritizing ideology over verifiable facts.
