SoftBank Secures Critical AI Infrastructure with $4B DigitalBridge Investment

Date:

SoftBank Group is securing critical artificial intelligence infrastructure through a $4 billion investment in DigitalBridge Group, both companies announced. The transaction reflects founder Masayoshi Son’s strategy of identifying and acquiring infrastructure assets that will be absolutely essential to AI technology deployment.
Through this investment, SoftBank gains access to digital infrastructure that provides foundational capabilities for AI systems to function. Son has been systematically directing SoftBank’s capital toward artificial intelligence with focus on critical infrastructure components. The unprecedented demand for computing resources to power AI applications has made certain infrastructure assets mission-critical, which DigitalBridge’s portfolio comprehensively addresses.
DigitalBridge specializes in digital infrastructure investments encompassing datacenter properties, telecommunications towers, fiber optic networks, small-cell wireless systems, and edge computing facilities—all critical to AI deployment. The company’s holdings include industry leaders such as Vantage Data Centers, Zayo, Switch, and AtlasEdge. Founded in 1991 as Colony Capital with a real estate focus, the firm underwent a complete transformation under CEO Marc Ganzi’s leadership, exiting traditional property investments and adopting the DigitalBridge name in 2021.
Marc Ganzi will continue leading these critical assets as CEO, with DigitalBridge maintaining operational independence. The criticality is evident in the scale: DigitalBridge oversaw roughly $108 billion in assets as of September 30, positioning it among the world’s largest dedicated investors in digital infrastructure. This gives SoftBank control over infrastructure that will be essential to AI’s continued growth.
SoftBank’s focus on critical AI infrastructure extends to other major initiatives. The company is a core partner in the Stargate project, collaborating with OpenAI, Oracle, and MGX, a technology investor headquartered in Abu Dhabi. This ambitious venture involves billions of dollars in investments to build large-scale computing infrastructure purpose-built for advanced AI development. The project includes plans for five computing facilities in Texas, New Mexico, and Ohio with approximately 7 gigawatts of total power capacity.
