Trump’s Russia U-Turn: From Criticizing Zelenskyy to Demanding Putin ‘STOP!’

Date:

U.S. President Donald Trump has executed a notable U-turn on his Russia-Ukraine policy, shifting from publicly criticizing Ukrainian President Zelenskyy to vehemently demanding that Vladimir Putin “STOP!” his deadly bombardments. This dramatic change in rhetoric marks a significant policy evolution, as Trump prepares to make a “major statement” on Russia and escalates U.S. support for Ukraine.
For months, Trump had expressed frustration with Zelenskyy and suggested Russia was more amenable to peace. However, Russia’s relentless assault on Ukrainian civilian areas, culminating in June’s highest monthly civilian casualties in three years, appears to have fundamentally altered his perspective. Trump’s recent condemnations of Putin’s actions highlight a deep-seated frustration with the ongoing violence.
In a tangible sign of this shift, Trump confirmed that the U.S. would send more badly needed Patriot air defense missiles to Ukraine, with the European Union agreeing to finance these advanced weapon systems. This commitment directly addresses Ukraine’s desperate need to counter Russia’s intensified drone and missile attacks, which have overwhelmed existing defenses.
The arrival of Trump’s special envoy in Kyiv for high-level defense talks and the concurrent visit of NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte to Washington underscore the renewed international focus on strengthening Ukraine. With a close ally of Trump, Senator Lindsey Graham, predicting a “record level” of weapons flowing to Ukraine, the stage is set for a more assertive and unified approach to compelling Russia towards a resolution.
