After nearly three decades of delivering powerful rhythms, drummer Matt Cameron has announced his departure from rock titans Pearl Jam. The 62-year-old musician confirmed the news on social media, signaling a significant change for one of music’s most enduring and influential bands. His exit marks the close of a remarkable 27-year tenure, during which he became an integral part of the band’s sound and stability.
Cameron’s journey with Pearl Jam began in 1998, when he stepped in as a temporary replacement for Jack Irons during a tour. What started as a fill-in role quickly evolved into a permanent position, with his impactful drumming making its studio debut on the 2000 album Binaural. His consistent presence provided much-needed solidity to a band that had experienced several drummer changes in its formative years.
Before his time with Pearl Jam, Cameron was already a highly respected figure in the music world, having established himself as the drummer for Soundgarden, another cornerstone of the Seattle grunge scene. His unique position allowed him to perform with both iconic bands between 2010 and 2017, showcasing his immense talent and versatility.
His departure comes shortly after concluding a tour supporting Pearl Jam’s recently released 12th album, Dark Matter. Fans and fellow musicians alike will undoubtedly reflect on Cameron’s significant contributions to Pearl Jam’s legacy, which include a string of successful albums and countless memorable live performances.
