ByteDance, the Beijing-based technology company behind TikTok, has agreed to reduce its ownership stake to 19.9% in the American entity through a negotiated solution to what could have escalated into broader conflict. The new US entity implements security measures satisfying American requirements—data protection, algorithm security, enhanced moderation, software integrity—while avoiding requirements so onerous they’d be tantamount to forced closure without compensation.
