In a unanimous vote, the Mississippi Environmental Quality Permit Board has granted Elon Musk’s xAI a permit for 41 methane gas turbines. These permanent units will power the Colossus 2 datacenter in Southaven, replacing the “temporary” turbines that have been in use for several months. The decision has sparked a new wave of outrage among local environmental groups and residents.
The turbines are a necessary component of xAI’s “Colossus” supercomputer, which is used to develop the Grok AI tool. Because the regional power grid cannot keep up with the facility’s energy needs, xAI has built its own localized power plant. This strategy allows the company to reach its goal of nearly 2 gigawatts of total compute capacity at “warp speed.”
The NAACP has been highly critical of the project, stating that the MDEQ ignored the concerns of hundreds of residents. Community members have complained about the noise and the impact of the facility’s emissions on their health. The NAACP has already filed a notice of intent to sue, alleging that xAI is violating the federal Clean Air Act.
Environmental advocates point out that the 41 turbines will make the facility one of the largest industrial polluters in northern Mississippi. The emissions include hazardous chemicals like formaldehyde and nitrogen oxide, which are known to cause chronic respiratory problems. Critics argue that the state is allowing a “billionaire’s personal power plant” to operate without adequate oversight.
Despite the ongoing protests, xAI is continuing its $20 billion expansion into the “Digital Delta” with the Macrohardrr project. This massive datacenter cluster is expected to bring significant economic benefits to the state, according to Governor Tate Reeves. For the families of Southaven, however, the primary concern is ensuring that this growth does not come at the cost of their health.
