“Deliberate Ramming”: China’s Charge as Sea Dispute with Philippines Escalates

Date:

The maritime dispute between China and the Philippines escalated sharply on Tuesday with a collision at Scarborough Shoal and a subsequent accusation from Beijing of a “deliberate ramming.” The Chinese Coast Guard claims a Philippine ship intentionally hit its vessel during a confrontation where Chinese forces also used water cannons to deter a large Philippine fleet.
The incident involved over ten Philippine government ships attempting to approach the shoal, a territory claimed by both countries. China’s Coast Guard described its use of water cannons as a necessary response to an incursion. However, the allegation of an intentional ramming by the Philippines marks a significant and dangerous new development.
This physical clash erupted just six days after China provoked regional anger by declaring part of the shoal a national nature reserve. The Philippines, which calls the area Bajo de Masinloc, viewed this as a clear violation of its sovereignty and was preparing a diplomatic protest. The on-water confrontation has now superseded the war of words.
The South China Sea is a global strategic hotspot, and the Scarborough Shoal is one of its most contested features. The disputes are fueled by China’s expansive claims, which are not aligned with international law and create friction with the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, and others. The stakes involve control over vital shipping lanes and rich fishing grounds.
Allied nations are lining up to support Manila. A prominent US senator blasted China’s “coercive” behavior, and both the UK and Australia have publicly expressed their concern. In a statement that directly addressed China’s latest tactic, Canada’s embassy in the Philippines said it opposed using environmental protection as a cover for territorial expansion.
