Describing the war with Iran as an inevitable confrontation that had been building for decades, President Donald Trump said on Friday that Iranian leaders had been earning their fate through nearly 50 years of violence against innocent people around the world. He called them “deranged scumbags” and declared their deaths a great personal honor, framing the entire conflict as the culmination of a long historical process. The rhetoric accompanied a day of devastating military action, with US and Israeli warplanes striking Tehran in successive waves and Trump announcing the obliteration of Kharg Island’s military infrastructure.
The conflict was triggered by Israel’s killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the man who had led Iran’s Islamic Republic for 37 years and whose death created a leadership vacuum that his son Mojtaba filled under conditions of extreme duress. US officials describe Mojtaba Khamenei as wounded, disfigured, and hiding underground after failing to appear in any video or audio communication since issuing a written statement Thursday pledging continued resistance. The elder Khamenei’s death set off the chain of escalations that has since consumed the entire Middle East in a cascading crisis.
US and Israeli forces have combined to strike more than 15,000 enemy targets since the war began. Israel reported over 200 individual strikes in the most recent 24-hour period alone. Trump announced that US Central Command had completely obliterated every military facility on Kharg Island, describing the operation as one of the most powerful bombing raids in Middle Eastern history. He warned that the island’s oil infrastructure would be struck immediately if Iran continued to attack shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway carrying roughly one-fifth of global energy supplies.
The violence has spread across the Middle East with alarming speed. Lebanon has recorded over 600 deaths and 800,000 displaced, with eight more killed in Sidon Friday. Hezbollah injured about 60 Israelis in rocket salvoes at northern Israel. Saudi Arabia intercepted close to 50 Iranian drones. Qatar ordered Doha evacuations before a missile interception. Two died in Oman. Dubai’s financial district sustained damage. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards launched new coordinated strikes on Israel as part of al-Quds Day. Iran has reported over 1,300 deaths since the conflict began.
Tehran residents described a city under siege, with constant explosions, power cuts, rubble, and dwindling fuel supplies preventing escape. A retired professor begged the international community to act before the city was completely destroyed. A shopkeeper counted six explosions in one hour. The United States has lost 13 service members, including six in a tanker aircraft crash in Iraq. France lost a soldier in Iraq to an Iranian militia drone. European governments sought diplomatic back-channels with Tehran for Strait of Hormuz shipping safety as global energy markets watched the crisis with deepening alarm.
