Reports of an imminent winding-up petition from HMRC appear to have forced Dejphon Chansiri to place Sheffield Wednesday into administration. The club, which owes an estimated $pounds{}$1 million in taxes, was immediately docked 12 points by the EFL, dropping them to -6.
The move ends Chansiri’s chaotic reign, which the Supporters Trust blames for “years of financial mismanagement.” The club has been “living hand-to-mouth,” failing to pay staff and players on time in five of the last seven months.
The 12-point penalty leaves the Owls 15 points from safety, with relegation all but assured. Fans, however, are celebrating Chansiri’s departure in what they call a “bittersweet” day. Seats spelling his name were quickly removed from Hillsborough.
Manager Henrik Pedersen called the administration a necessary “fresh restart” after months of turmoil. “We knew… it cannot continue,” he said. He met with administrators Begbies Traynor, who are now seeking a “swift sale” of the club and stadium.
Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said the collapse reinforces the need for an independent football regulator. In the meantime, the Supporters Trust is calling on fans to end their boycotts and “rebuild from the ground up.”
