China and EU Strengthen Trade Cooperation to Address Economic Differences

Date:

China and the European Union (EU) have committed to enhancing trade cooperation and addressing economic differences through dialogue, following high-level trade and investment discussions in Beijing. The consultations, co-chaired by Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao and European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maroš Šefčovič, underscored the importance of resolving disputes constructively and maintaining stable economic relations.

During the second meeting of the China-EU trade and investment consultation mechanism, various topics were addressed, including trade imbalances, export controls, intellectual property rights, electric vehicles, and World Trade Organization (WTO) reforms. Both parties agreed to improve market access, strengthen trade monitoring, and explore potential tariff reductions on certain goods within WTO guidelines.

Key discussions also covered regulatory concerns impacting sectors such as pharmaceuticals, medical devices, cosmetics, and agricultural products. A significant focus was placed on electric vehicle trade, with both sides reviewing price undertakings related to the EU’s anti-subsidy investigation into Chinese electric vehicles. Additionally, they agreed to continue discussions on export control issues to facilitate compliant trade and ensure stable global supply chains.

Beyond addressing current trade challenges, China and the EU expressed interest in expanding cooperation in areas like artificial intelligence, renewable energy, digital services, and green technology. Opportunities to increase mutual investment were also highlighted, with a call for fair, transparent, and predictable business environments for companies operating in each other’s markets.

The consultations concluded with a commitment to implement the agreed outcomes and continue negotiations. Plans are in place for a ministerial-level video meeting in January 2027, followed by a third trade and investment consultation meeting in March 2027, aiming to further solidify the economic partnership between China and the EU.
