In a bid to ease tensions between the United States and Iran, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi engaged in discussions with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Beijing, advocating for restraint and a return to diplomatic negotiations. Wang emphasized that continued conflict between Washington and Tehran does not serve the interests of the involved nations or the broader international community.

During the talks, Wang called for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global energy supplies, stressing the importance of keeping international shipping routes safe and accessible. He urged both countries to adhere to their existing memorandum of understanding and rebuild a negotiation process based on past agreements.

Wang also highlighted the need for stability in the region, urging countries to prevent the spread of tensions to Yemen and the Red Sea. He encouraged resolving disputes through dialogue and negotiations to maintain peace and security.

Echoing a commitment to diplomacy, Araghchi stated that Iran does not wish for the conflict to continue and is prepared to return to diplomatic channels while safeguarding its national interests. He affirmed that Tehran considers the existing US-Iran memorandum valid and is open to collaborating with regional countries to improve relations and security.

The Iranian foreign minister welcomed China’s initiatives for enhancing peace and security in the Middle East, expressing Tehran’s willingness to deepen cooperation with Beijing. This engagement highlights China’s role in facilitating discussions aimed at stabilizing a volatile region.
