During a pivotal meeting in Beijing, India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval emphasized the necessity of maintaining peace and stability along the border with China to foster the continued development of bilateral relations. This meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi marked the 25th round of talks between the special representatives of both nations, focusing on the enduring boundary dispute. The discussions centered on advancing boundary delimitation, enhancing border management, and expanding cooperation across the frontier.
Both nations reviewed the progress in bilateral relationships positively, discussing strategies to sustain stability along the Line of Actual Control. They reaffirmed their commitment to resolving the boundary issue through a political settlement that aligns with their long-term interests. These talks are seen as a continuation of efforts following the 2024 agreement between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping to ease tensions in the Ladakh sector, leading to the resumption of people-to-people exchanges, the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra, and border trade through designated routes.
Ajit Doval noted that bilateral ties between India and China have been gradually normalizing, attributing this progress to the maintenance of peace along the border. Meanwhile, China stated that the boundary issue should be viewed within the broader context of their relationship. Despite the positive tone, both sides refrained from providing detailed information on the progress regarding the actual demarcation of the disputed boundary. However, they agreed to continue negotiations, planning to hold the next round of special representative talks in India in 2027.
The timing of the discussions adds weight to their significance, as they precede Chinese President Xi Jinping’s expected visit to India for the BRICS summit in September.
