China’s Most Powerful Single-Body Rocket Soars on First Launch

Date:

China marked a significant milestone in its space exploration endeavors with the successful inaugural flight of the Long March 12B carrier rocket on Monday. This launch, executed from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, underscores the nation’s rapidly advancing space capabilities. The rocket efficiently achieved its mission by entering the designated orbit and deploying the 10th batch of Spacesail Constellation communication satellites.

The impressive Long March 12B stands about 72 meters tall, distinguishing itself as China’s most powerful single-body rocket to date. It operates with a two-stage launch system fueled by 10 liquid oxygen and kerosene engines, providing an impressive thrust of approximately 800 metric tons at liftoff. This enables the rocket to carry payloads exceeding 20 tons into low-Earth orbit, a crucial attribute for expanding space operations.

Initiated in September 2024, the development of the Long March 12B involved the integration of several cutting-edge technologies aimed at enhancing its performance and efficiency. Key advancements include high-performance propulsion components, lightweight structural designs, optimized fuel management systems, and sophisticated autonomous flight-control software capable of addressing in-flight anomalies. Looking ahead, engineers are focusing on future tests aimed at recovering and reusing the rocket’s first-stage booster, with the prospect of introducing a reusable version of the Long March 12B in the coming years.

The mission’s success also plays a pivotal role in the expansion of the Spacesail Constellation, a satellite network in low-Earth orbit designed to deliver high-speed global broadband internet services. With this launch, the project has now seen over 160 satellites deployed, working towards its ambitious goal of deploying more than 10,000 satellites by 2030.

This achievement highlights China’s growing influence in the commercial space sector and its strategic ambitions to enhance global satellite internet coverage. The successful launch of the Long March 12B not only demonstrates China’s technological prowess but also strengthens its position in the competitive arena of global space exploration.
