European Commission Leadership Calls for International Law Adherence

Date:

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has joined European leaders in calling for adherence to international law following the United States military operation in Venezuela. Her statement reflects concerns at the highest levels of European Union governance about the Saturday strikes that captured President Nicolás Maduro.
Von der Leyen’s position aligns the European Commission with member states including France, Spain, and Denmark in emphasizing the importance of respecting established legal norms. The unified European response, with the notable exception of Italy, demonstrates broad concern about sovereignty violations and dangerous precedents.
The Commission president’s intervention gives institutional weight to European criticism beyond individual member state positions. Her call for international law respect reflects the EU’s broader foreign policy approach emphasizing multilateralism, rules-based order, and peaceful resolution of conflicts.
US Attorney General Pam Bondi has announced that Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores will face drug trafficking charges in New York, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirming the charges relate to narcotics operations. President Trump stated the couple is currently aboard a ship being transported to the United States for prosecution.
The international community has responded with widespread condemnation, with UN Secretary General António Guterres warning of dangerous precedents. Major powers including China and Russia have criticized the operation, while Latin American responses have divided along ideological lines. Italy’s Giorgia Meloni broke from other European leaders by characterizing the American action as legitimate, creating visible rifts within EU foreign policy consensus.
