Hawaii-Bound F-16V Jets Redirect to Taiwan After Departure

Date:

Two newly acquired F-16V Block 70 fighter jets from the United States, destined for Taiwan, encountered an unexpected setback when they returned to Hawaii shortly after takeoff. The aircraft, bearing the serial numbers 6727 and 6728, took off from Hickam Field in Hawaii with plans to proceed to Guam for refueling before heading to Taiwan. However, for reasons currently unknown, the jets turned back and landed at their initial departure point, potentially causing further delays in their delivery.

Taiwan has placed an order for a total of 66 F-16 C/D Block 70 fighter jets to bolster its air defense capabilities, particularly in the eastern region. These aircraft are set to be based at Chihhang Air Base in Taitung County, operated by the Air Force’s 7th Tactical Fighter Wing. The journey from Hawaii to Guam is estimated to take approximately eight hours and 20 minutes, followed by a four-hour and 40-minute flight from Guam to Taiwan.

The arrival of the first jet in Taiwan was anticipated this week, marking a significant milestone in the deal. Originally slated for delivery in 2023, these aircraft have already experienced delays due to complications from relocating and restarting the production line and disruptions within the supply chain.

Despite the current setback, the remainder of the fleet is expected to be delivered in stages, with the final aircraft arriving in 2027 and 2028. This acquisition forms a critical component of Taiwan’s ongoing efforts to enhance its defensive measures amid regional tensions.
