China Dominates, Providing 99.3% of Thailand’s Solar Panel Imports

Date:

Thailand has seen a significant increase in solar panel imports, with the total value reaching $426.7 million in the first seven months of 2026, marking an 88.7% rise compared to the previous year. The data, provided by Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce and Customs Department, highlights that a staggering 99.3% of these imports originated from China.

Chinese imports alone accounted for $423.9 million, reflecting a robust annual growth of 107.1%. In stark contrast, Singapore and Hong Kong contributed minimally, each representing approximately 0.3% of the total import value for solar panels.

This surge in imports aligns with Thailand’s preparation for a substantial household solar installation initiative. The government plans to subsidize up to THB50,000 per household, initially targeting one million homes with the potential to expand to 1.5 million. This program aims to foster rooftop and ground-mounted solar installations, ultimately lowering household electricity costs and nurturing the country’s clean-energy supply chain.

In addition to increasing imports, Thai officials are considering strategies to bolster local solar manufacturing. Collaborations with the Ministry of Labour are underway to train workers in solar panel assembly, installation, and maintenance. Moreover, discussions with the Board of Investment are focusing on reducing duties for production inputs unavailable domestically, aiming to support local industry growth.
